Sewer pipe repair in Atlantic City

Some sewer defects in Atlantic City cannot be fixed from inside the pipe. A deep belly, a fully collapsed length or a lateral that has pulled away from the main needs a hole in the ground, and on a barrier island that hole fills with water as fast as it is dug. This page explains how a conventional repair is done here and why it is usually kept to one small pit.

Why some repairs still need a shovel

Trenchless methods rehabilitate a pipe along its existing path and at its existing grade. Three conditions defeat that. A belly deep enough to hold standing water will still hold it after a liner is cured inside it, so the settled section has to be lifted and re-laid on proper bedding. A length of lateral that has collapsed completely, with sand filling the bore, offers nothing for a sleeve to bond to and may stop a bursting head. A lateral that has separated from the public main, or whose tap was never made properly, needs a new connection built in the open. In Atlantic City, where settlement in sand fill is the leading cause of lateral failure, the belly is by far the most common of the three.

Re-bedding a belly

The locator marks the sag's position and depth on the surface during the inspection. A pit is opened over it, sized to the length of the dipped section plus a foot or two on each side. In the island's sand, the pit walls are held with a trench box or sheeting from the first few feet down, and a pump runs continuously because the hole reaches groundwater almost at once. The settled pipe is removed, the bottom of the pit is brought to the correct grade with compacted crushed stone, and new pipe, usually PVC or polyethylene, is laid on it with the slope checked by level. The new section is joined to the sound pipe on each side with shielded couplings. The pit is backfilled with stone and compacted in lifts so the fix does not become the next belly. A liner is often then run through the whole lateral, including the new section, which seals the couplings and the old joints at the same time.

Removing a collapse or rebuilding the tap

A collapsed length is handled the same way, with the crushed pipe and the sand that has entered it removed from the pit and new pipe laid in its place. If the collapse is at the property line or under the sidewalk, the pit falls in the municipal right-of-way and the road-opening permit governs how the surface is restored. A failed connection at the main is the most involved conventional repair, because the pit is in the street, the main may be deep, and the tap must be made to the standard of the town that owns the collection system. The installer coordinates the tap with the municipality, and in some towns the municipal crew makes the connection itself.

The hybrid approach

Few laterals in Atlantic City need to be dug along their full length. The usual pattern is one pit for the defect that requires it and trenchless work for everything else: a liner inverted from the pit toward the house and another toward the main, or a bursting pull that uses the pit as one of its two ends. The owner gets a lateral that is new or rehabilitated from foundation to main with a single patch of disturbed lawn or sidewalk. the verified installer covering Atlantic City plans and performs both halves of the hybrid job for island and mainland addresses throughout Atlantic County, and the lining component follows the standards described at the CIPP reference.

Shoring, dewatering and safety

Open excavation in saturated sand is the most hazardous part of sewer work anywhere, and it is treated accordingly. No crew member enters a pit deeper than a few feet without a box or sheeting in place. The pump discharge is directed where the municipality allows, and the pit is never left open overnight on a sidewalk. Other utilities, including the gas and water services that often run parallel to the lateral and close to it on a narrow rowhouse lot, are located before the first bucket is lifted. Where the lateral passes under a foundation wall the dig stops short of it and the section under the wall is handled from inside.

Permits and getting started

Like any lateral work in New Jersey, the repair runs on a plumbing permit from the local construction office with a licensed master plumber responsible, and any pit in the sidewalk or the roadway adds the town's road-opening permit and restoration requirements. Reach the installer at (877) 739-3789 or through the form. The inspection comes first, the quote separates the excavation from the trenchless work so the owner can see what each costs, and most hybrid jobs are completed in one to two days. Questions we hear about sewer line repair & replacement

How deep is a belly before it has to be dug?+

There is no single number. The installer looks at how much water the sag holds when the line is at rest, how long the sagging section is, and how often the house backs up. A dip that drains on its own is usually lined through. One that holds an inch or more of standing water across several feet is re-bedded.

How is a pit kept open in sand with the tide coming in?+

A trench box or steel sheeting holds the walls, and a pump runs the whole time the pit is open. The crew digs at low tide where the lateral is deep, works quickly, and backfills with compacted stone rather than the sand that came out so the pipe does not settle again.

Will the sidewalk or street be opened?+

Only if the defect is under it. A belly or a collapse under the lawn or the driveway is reached from private property. A failed connection at the main is reached from a pit at the curb or in the roadway, which brings a road-opening permit and restoration to the municipality's standard.

Is the rest of the lateral replaced at the same time?+

Usually not by digging. The common approach in Atlantic City is a hybrid: the one section that needs excavation is replaced in the pit, and the remaining footage is lined or burst from that same opening. The result is a fully rehabilitated lateral with a single small disturbance to the surface.

How do I get a price?+

Phone (877) 739-3789 or submit the contact form. The camera and locator establish where the defect is and how deep, the quote describes the pit, the shoring, the dewatering and the restoration separately from any trenchless work, and nothing is estimated from the surface.
